Online Application for Texas Concealed Handgun License

To speed up process for CHL license, pay online. Fee is $140 for age less than 60 years old. Fee is $70 for age 60 years or more. Renewal for less than 60 years is $70 to the state. Renewal for age 60 years or more is $35 to the state. Please do the following:

  1. Go to Texas Dept of Public Safety website: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us
    1. Click on "Concealed Handgun"
    2. Click on "Apply for a Concealed Handgun License"
    3. Click "Continue"
    4. Click "Apply for a License"
    5. Follow Instructions

What Happens Next?

A PACKET WILL BE SENT TO YOU IN ABOUT 2 WEEKS, DO NOT FILL OUT ANYTHING IN PACKET BUT BRING IT TO CLASS.

CALL OR GO ONLINE AT THE FINGERPRINT WEBSITE AND GET AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE YOUR FINGERPRINTS MADE. 888-467-2080.

SOME FINGERPRINT LOCATIONS TAKE THE TWO REQUIRED PASSPORT PICTURES AND SIGN THEM AT THEIR LOCATION, SOME DO NOT. ASK IF THEY TAKE THE PASSPORT PICTURES. IF THEY DO NOT TAKE THEM, PLEASE GO TO WALGREEN'S OR CVS PHARMACY. COST THERE WILL BE $7.99 FOR BOTH PICTURES.

TAKE BOTH FINGERPRINT CARDS OUT OF THE PACKET FROM TEXAS DPS AND THE TWO PASSPORT PHOTOS TO THE ELECTRONIC FINGERPRINT LOCATION AND HAVE YOUR FINGERPRINTS MADE. HAVE BOTH PHOTOS SIGNED ON THE BACK BY THE FINGERPRINT TAKER.

I KNOW THIS IS AN INCONVENIENCE, HOWEVER, THE CLASS WILL BE WORTH IT.

BRING ALL FORMS TO CLASS TO BE COMPLETED. DPS REQUIRES FORMS TO BE COMPLETED IN A SPECIAL WAY.

 

Concerning Fingerprinting

I do not make the fingerprints because Electronic Fingerprints are the best and the Texas Dept of Public Safety recommends the Electronic way. There are several locations set up to do fingerprints electronically.

  2. Click on "Schedule a fingerprinting appointment online" or click on "Check for location and forms".
  3. Follow instructions
  4. PAYMENT OF $9.95 IS BY U.S. POSTAL MONEY ORDER, PERSONAL CHECK. NO CASH . MAY VARY AT DIFFERENT LOCATIONS.
  5. Make copy of Fingerprint Application forms from www.l1id.com and take to fingerprint location.

Ink fingerprints have a 25% rejection when sent to the state. Electronic fingerprints have a 2% rejection and are of the highest quality. I have seen many ink fingerprint cards come back. You can also call for an appointment at:

(888) 467-2080. This process will avoid many delays.

Denton residents can be fingerprinted at the Denton Police Dept. or other choice of location. Two recent passport

photos need to be taken to the fingerprint location and both signed on the back by the fingerprinter. Bring

all to class for completion.
